4 Natural Essentials to Battle Dry Skin

The following post is sponsored by Whole Foods and JustNatural.
As always, all opinions are my own. For more information see my disclosures here.

I have really dry skin. That sucks, right? I also have acne prone skin. Dry, acne prone skin. So when I put on acne medication, my already dry skin gets even drier and begins to flake. Flaky skin plus makeup is no bueno. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m switching to a more natural skin care routine to hopefully get my dry skin in order. As I’m learning more about natural products, I plan to share my experiences and hopefully inspire you to switch to a more clean regimen as well.

Today, I’m excited to share four natural essentials to battle dry skin during these frigid winter months.

1. Water – I am mentioning this first, because it’s probably the most important of all. As I mentioned in this post, I’m drinking much more water than I used to and I’m seeing a positive impact on my overall health, including my skin. Water keeps you hydrated from the inside out. I like adding lemons to my water for added flavor.

2. Spectrum Organic Coconut Oil – Probably my favorite part of my current nighttime skin care routine is removing my makeup. I hate sitting around the house in makeup, especially if I’m staying in for the night. Here’s what I do. I place the jar of coconut oil under warm water to liquefy the oil. (It’s solid at room temperature). I then use about a tablespoon of the oil and massage it in circular motions around my face. This really breaks down any makeup I have on. After a minute or so, I’ll take a washcloth and soak it under warm water. I then place the washcloth over my face and press down lightly. I usually repeat soaking the cloth and placing it on my face a few times. It feels amazing! I eventually remove the cloth and gently wipe away any excess eye makeup that is still lingering. *Note: You want to use warm water, not hot. Hot water can actually make your dry skin worse.

3. JustNatural Acne Spot Treatment – Since my skin tends to be sensitive and acne prone, I still need to use an acne spot treatment every night. I’m hoping that eventually I won’t need to, but for now it’s part of my routine. Since the topical medications from my dermatologist weren’t working (trust me, I’ve tried practically everyone on the market), I figured I should try something a bit more natural and see if that has any positive effects on my skin. This spot treatment from JustNatural works so well for me. After cleansing my skin in the shower, I dry off my face and apply a few drops of this to my palms. Then, I rub my palms together and press this gently all over my face. I use this as an all-over treatment instead of just on active spots. Within an hour, my spots are dramatically smaller and less irritated and red. If you’re looking for a natural acne treatment, I highly recommend this one.

4. Weleda Baby Calendula Face Cream – Over the past few weeks, I’ve visited my local Whole Foods store a bunch of times to find new products. The Whole Body specialists were very knowledgeable and recommended products that addressed my specific skin care concerns. Did you know Whole Foods encourages their vendors to use naturally-derived ingredients, pure essential oil fragrances, gentle preservatives and non-petroleum ingredients? They also don’t accept any products that were tested on animals.

One of the products I picked up at Whole Foods was the Weleda Baby Calendula Face Cream. I know what you’re thinking. “You bought a product meant to be used on babies?” Yes, yes I did my friend and it works wonders on my sensitive skin. This face cream is all-natural and made with 96% organic ingredients, including calendula flower which calms inflammation and provides a protective layer on your skin. It also has essential fatty acids from organic sweet almond oil and fairly traded beeswax, which enhances and maintains moisture. This cream is free of synthetic fragrance, chemical preservatives and petroleum-derived ingredients.

This product is a great alternative to the Cetaphil Body Lotion. I was using that product for years because it really helped keep my skin moisturized all day, but I recently learned that petroleum is a main ingredient. The Whole Foods associate told me that petroleum can actually make acne worse because it locks moisture against the skin, blocks pores, and prohibits the skin from breathing. I’m so glad I got rid of my tub of Cetaphil and switched over to the Weleda option. It works just as well and doesn’t clog my pores.

Awesome list! Love keepin’ the beauty stuff natural 🙂

Ahhh thank you!! I have been using cetaphil forever because I too have super super dry skin that is acne prone. I’ve pretty much just accepted that I can’t wear make up the entire winter season. I can’t wait to try the calendula creme- it’s natural and in my price range! Perfect!

I love Spectrum Coconut Oil. I bake with it and use it on my skin. It is GREAT!

love it for cooking too! so diverse!

You know, I try all of these things and my skin is still dry! I think my body/skin is immune to EVERYTHING! Ah ha ha!

I’ve also used Cetaphil lotion for YEARSSSS now. It’s def not a “natural” product, but it’s my go-to when my skin is super dry.
