Healing Crystals 101

As always, all opinions are my own. For more information see my disclosures here.

1. What are the main uses?

Crystals are used for many things including energetic healing, protection, stress release, enhancing meditation, cleansing the home, and aesthetics in terms of jewelry.

2. How do you pick the right one?

Short answer: Ask yourself, “How does this crystal make me feel?” If it feels right, then that is the one for you.  When I chose the crystals that I have, I gravitated towards whichever caught my attention first. Depending on what you’re looking for, crystals can make you feel happy, peaceful or more energetic.

Here are two videos to help you pick the right crystal for you: buying online, buying in-person

3. How does color affect its use?

The color of a crystal can work with the color of the chakra they represent. I’m still learning a lot about chakras and will do a full post about them soon. Chakras are an energetic theory that originates from ancient Ayurvedic healing, a practice that is over 3,000 years old. Clear/white crystals can work with all chakras, while most dark crystals work with the lower chakras. Below is a list of crystal colors and how they affect the body.

Red: strengthens the body, promotes courage, stimulates vitality and energy
Pink: promotes love, protects from violence or aggression
Brown: acts as a grounding force and promotes stability and clear thinking
Orange: promotes personal power, stimulates creativity and ability to adjust to changes
Gold: increases personal power, promotes courage and confidence, preserves health
Yellow: promotes expression, increases eloquence, enhances decision making skills
Green: attracts prosperity and wealth, promotes balance and growth
Purple: sharpens awareness and connection with higher self, increases imagination and inspiration
Blue: promotes peace, enhances quality of communication
White/Clear: promotes good fortune, sleep and protection
Black: symbolizes self control and resilience
Gray: suggests efficiency, improves relationships

4. What crystals are good for beginners?

First, you can start with whichever crystal feels good to you or catches your attention – that’s what I did! However, if you’re looking for healing a specific ailment, I suggest you check out this list. Here are just a few different ailments and the crystals that help heal them.

Asthma: amber, amethyst, blue jade
Emotional Imbalance: rainbow moonstone, rose quartz, sodalite
Crohn’s Disease: dravite, green aventurine, moss agate
Fatigue: garnet, rose quartz, sunstone
Menstruation/Cramping: chrysocolla, jet, lapis lazuli
Low Self-Confidence: citrine, garnet, tiger iron

5. Are crystals expensive and where can you buy them?

The prices of crystals are determined by their rarity, size, color and cut. When looking for healing crystals, you don’t necessarily need to have the prettiest or clearest crystal. All you need is one that resonates with you. Most crystals range in price from $1.00 for simple tumbled stones to thousands of dollars for a rare crystal like Tanzanite.

You can purchase crystals from a variety of places, such as metaphysical bookstores, bead or jewelry stores, or even alternative practitioner offices (i.e. acupuncturists or massage therapists). The crystals I have were provided by HealingCrystals.com. If you use the discount code JOY10, you can receive a 10% discount.
