organizing the hall closet

The following post is sponsored by Wayfair.
As always, all opinions are my own. For more information see my disclosures here.

Apartment living has its pluses and minuses. A huge negative, at least in our apartment, is the lack of storage space. Due to this, most of the closets in our home are multi-functional. When I was thinking about what to title this post, I couldn’t figure out what type of closet I was talking about! It’s not really a linen closet, because we keep other random items in there. It’s not really a bathroom closet either. So, I settled with calling it our hall closet, and this closet needed a lot of help.

Every time I went into this closet, I cringed. I could never find what I was looking for, and when I pulled out one item, it seemed like everything else fell down too. It was time for some major reorganization.

My biggest gripe (and Bryan’s too!) was that our entertaining pieces were balanced on top of each other. If we accidentally bumped into them while grabbing something else, all the pieces would fall to the floor. We’d then have to take the time to place them carefully back into the closet. While surfing on Wayfair last month, I found the perfect solution to our problem: the Home Basics 2 Tone Storage Bin with Handles. I ordered two of the large size bins.

When the bins arrived, I immediately started re-organizing the closet! I followed my usual re-organization routine:

Step 1: Take a photo of your messy space!

Step 2: Assess the situation.

Step 3: Go shopping or re-purpose baskets/bins that you already own.

Step 4: Pull everything out.

Step 5: Clean the surface and each individual object.

Step 5: Make three piles – keep, toss, donate.

Step 6: Group “keep” items into categories.

Step 7: Decide where you want to place your “keep” items.

Step 8: Put everything back.

Step 9: Take an after photo!

I was pretty pleased with the final look.

The best thing about the closet now is that everything has its own place. When I want to look for cleaning supplies, I know where  to go. When I need a clean towel or extra bathroom supplies, I can easily access them. If you’re looking to re-organize the messy closet in your life, Wayfair has so many amazing products. My favorites include colorful storage bins from Home Basics,a 2 tier lazy Susan from Home Basics, and over the shelf dividers from Spectrum Diversified
