January 3, 2017

Hey guys! To kick off 2017, I’m bringing you another post in my Interview series. We’re chatting with my friend Kate from The Gold Sister. Kate and I went to high school together and clicked right away. We reconnected last year when she made a blog, and I can’t wait to see what 2017 brings for both of us.

Today, Kate’s sharing how she stays healthy while living in the city – her favorite recipes, restaurants, fitness tips and more. Enjoy!

Interview with Kate from The Gold Sister

Hey girl. Introduce yourself to my readers.

Hey hey, I’m Kate! I’m a plant-obsessed lifestyle blogger over at The Gold Sister, living in Philadelphia.

What are your go-to tips and tricks for staying healthy?

Biking or walking everywhere. I hate wasting money on Uber or the subway and it helps me get a decent workout without too much effort. I try to make it a point to consume a shot of apple cider vinegar mixed into a glass of water at least once a day to help gut health and digestion.

It’s not too hard to keep a healthy diet living in the city when there’s always some sort of fresh market at your disposal, like the Italian market in South Philly or the Reading Terminal Market. Philly also just opened a huge amount of new restaurants in the last year, most of which are trying to include dishes for all sorts of modified diets (like gluten free, or vegan).

What’s your favorite healthy breakfast recipe?

Overnight oats! It takes 5 minutes to set up the night before, but is a total life saver for someone like me who wants to sleep until the last possible second before they need to run out the door. In the next week or two I’ll be sharing my go-to recipe up on my blog, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled on that!

What about lunch and dinner?

Hmm, I don’t really have a go-to lunch or dinner, at least not one that’s overly healthy. However, I love my take on Whole Foods’ smoked mozzarella salad

Do you have healthy snacks you keep for on-the-go?

I’ve become obsessed with clementine oranges lately. So simple, and the right size if you’re craving just a little something.

What do you do full-time? And what inspired you to start your blog?

I’m a server in a pretty busy bar. While it can suck having to be “on” all the time with customers, it’s nice to be able to survive on working part-time hours, which gives me a lot of open time to devote to creative endeavors.

I’d say opening my blog was just an evolution of all the creative things I’ve dabbled in over the years, and the interest people started expressing in what I was doing. Making The Gold Sister just felt right.

Did you have any hesitations before starting your blog?

Definitely. It was hard at first to share my blog with people I know personally, offline, but eventually I just realized that so what if someone judged me? At least I’m doing something productive with my time! And for the most part, my friends have all been there to support me!

Who are some people that you look up to? Where do you find inspiration?

People who are unapologetically themselves. Strong women. Opinionated people.

I find inspiration in all things. In good light, morning and afternoon. In the way people carry themselves, and wondering why they are the way they are. The shapes we encounter daily, natural and man-made. I think once you learn to keep yourself open to the people and things around you, the world just starts showing you inspiration everywhere.

Can you give us a sneak peek on what’s to come for The Gold Sister?

I’m really looking to build an online community in the next year, as I’ve started to have people reach out to me in regards to finding their footing creatively online and off. It’s cool to have people start to look at you as a mini-authority on stuff that you didn’t know others wanted to learn, and I want to make a central place to really help direct!

I’m also looking to start sharing online guides, an actual newsletter, and tangible products (maybe a web store?). I’m overflowing with ideas, so here’s hoping I can make them work!
